Science and Spirituality

science and spirituality

Beginners’ point of view is mostly biased

Most often, people tend to look at Science and Spirituality as two extreme ends. This point of view leads to an acute understanding of either of them. World around us, including our own selves, cannot be explained by the present day Science and Spirituality alone. They go side by side. One of the problems with spiritual practices, principles and beliefs is that it does not produce exact explanations like Science. Those who have just begun their journey into spirituality, tend to reject each and everything proposed by Science. A field of knowledge such as Science appears as an evil to a beginner in spirituality. On the other hand, a science student tends to reject everything concerned with spirituality. S/he has a notion that science can explain everything through its experiment-observe-repeat method. A beginner in Science studies is presented with wonderful theories, experiments and findings that appear marvelous at first. As the time passes by, such theories do not help in day to day life; especially intangible but important aspects like satisfaction, happiness and peace. They do help in making your life comfortable with superior facilities though. You see, happiness and comfort are not independent functions in our lives.

People who made it big, knew it very well.

Scientists, who made great findings, performed wonderful experiments and gave super-duper theories, had a high spiritual quotient. People, who made their mark in the field of Science, never excluded spirituality from their dictionaries. A spiritual fellow, who has done in depth research on his own psyche, attitude, philosophical questions and world at large, is not alien to scientific principles. Be it mathematics or Science, some of the best known individuals in recorded history are known to have a strong inclination towards spirituality.

Spirituality and science are not mutually exclusive.

Present day findings in quantum physics point towards the dual nature of matter. Spiritual principles popular in east do not differ on this fact. Scientist ponders at the wonders of unknown intelligence and names it as evolution, big bang or something else. A spiritual person on the other hand, thinks that spirit or God is fundamental force or cause in the universe.Beauty of science is in its assertive nature. The very method of inquiry used in scientific studies ensures that doubts will be minimized to lowest possible levels. Such a method can surely help a man on spiritual path. Science has produced an extension to our outer-self, our senses. A telephone is an extension of our ears and a binocular is an extension of our eyes. Spirituality demands scientific enquiry and Science demands an understanding of ‘unknown’ :)

  1. Nice article ! What I feel is — science is partial visible manifestation of Spirituality. Spirituality is invisible but can be experienced and it is the mix of logic+art; whether science is just logic…and is in developing state.

The great Master who enjoyed higher level of Spirituality and knew all the meta-physics,i.e., astral travel, accessing Akashic records etc.,were unable to decode into science.

And the Scientist are just the students who need to learn from Spiritual Masters and develop science more properly.

In fact, there is a need of Spiritual Scientist. Being a totally Spiritual Master or being totally a scientist might not contribute to society properly. Religious fragmentation or making life killing machines isn’t human at all.

  4. Well said… and I think that science and spirituality are two sides of the same coin. While science can be explained and is backed by reasoning and proven theories, spirituality is more intuitive and somewhere cannot be always justified by reason.

    • Exactly.. Spirituality about one’s own self.. so intuition and spontaneity are the boats that carry us to spiritual goals.. scientific findings base their judgement on reason..

thanks for dropping by :) Stay tuned.

  5. This is a subject I’ve pondered for so many years. I finally wrote a book, entitled Finding God: To Believe or Not To Believe, on the subject of physics, contemporary philosophy and scientific thought in regards to the dichotomy of organized religion and spirituality…if you care to read a chapter it is at http://www.tobelieveornot.com
